Very saddened to receive this news from Lisa.
I met Wes in the late seventies or early eighties at a match and quickly struck up a friendship. He was passionate about football, music and motorsport and we had much in common. We also both enjoyed a beer or two and we were regular drinkers in the Coach and Horses and Ricky's Bar. We travelled Europe to watch Formula One and World Sports Prototype races and the 24hr Le Mans became a particular favourite, especially after witnessing the Jaguar victories there in 1988 and 1990. For Wes, the highlight of our travels was probably the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in 1988 when his beloved Ferraris finished first and second. We have never experienced a crowd response like we did that day. The Italians certainly knew how to celebrate. The red wine flowed freely that evening.
We both also shared an interest in the historic events of WWI. Wes had the greatest respect for relatives that he traced who had served and died for their country. Whenever we were in northern Europe, we would invariably end up at a cemetary or monument to pay our respects to those that never returned home.
Wes was the natural choice as my 'Best Man' and he was the first non-family memebr that I shared the news of the birth of our first son. I drove from the hospital to his house and we celebrated with champagne.
Wes and Lisa moved towards the Kent coast when the stairs at their Dartford property became too much of a challenge. They bought a bungalow and were getting it just how they wanted. Jill and I visited them just eight weeks ago and unbeknown to me, I was priviliged to share a beer with my best mate for the last time in their superbly decorated bar at the bottom of their garden. Thankfully, Jill took a picture of Wes and I sharing a beer in Barneys that day. It will be treasured.
Even though he had health problems, Wes had a very positive outlook. He and Lisa were clearly enjoying life down by the coast and already had their favourite bars and music venues. We had hoped that we would see more of Wes and Lisa once our youngest son started university next September.
Our thoughts are with Lisa at this sad time.
