This really was the classic case of the first goal scored dictating the rest of the game. As early as the 4th minute Ebbsfleet came close to doing just that with a shot by Courtney Cook being saved by Jade Charlton.
At the other end Abbey Davies received the ball from a corner from outside the box and unleashed a decent strike which went just wide of the post on 25 mins.
29 mins a defensive error let in Georgia Pearch who fired home to put the Fleet 1-0 up.
I'm not even going to call out the player who made the mistake because she's devasted. And this is thing with this team. When they don't win it hurts them. Their biggest critics when things don't work out are themselves. I feel their pain in the bar after the game when I speak with players like Emily Woodhouse who feels frustrated and angry with her own performance. It's not for want of trying. She just wasn't getting the rub of the green today. It was the same for everyone. Amy Russ, who is technically gifted up front had a great chance to score from a situation that 9 times out of 10 she would have got on the end of and put away. And you know it's not your day when poor Beth Powell goes off after receiving yet another wack on the nose.
In the evening I found myself in a bar in the company of Jade and Gabriella Howell.
It was good listening to Gabby explaining how much work she puts into her game not only off the field but off the training pitch too, spending hours of her own time in the gym striving to be the best she can be.
And from what I understand she's not the only one. The entire squad are always looking to improve by analysing their performances and doing whatever it takes to enhance their game.
Ebbsfleet are not the best team in the division but they are a long long way from being the worst too.
They have experienced players who have performed at a higher level. Your talking WSL here. They know how to control a game from a leading position. Even after losing Lydia Wills to the sin bin a minute after taking the lead.
In the 65th minute Shauni Griffiths hit a belter off the bar.
I bet she wishes she had £100 for everytime she's done that recently.
But the equaliser was only 3 minutes away. Brionne Fowle drew a foul and Shauni duly converted from the spot.
74 mins Russ went agonisingly close with a header rebounding off the foot of the post.
By this time Ebbsfleet were fighting for their lives and seemed quite happy to take a point.
As the final minutes approached it was bedlam in the hosts penalty area as Georgie Davis, Shauni and Emily Vaughan all went close.
Player of the match a tough call between Brionne and Shauni.
The equaliser was a joint effort with Shauni scoring the penalty won by Brionne who was quick and lively throughout and Shauni put in several decent tackles. So, doesn't make it any easier. Ok, Shauni hit the bar so nicks it by a millimetre.
